(NAR) VOL. 11 NO.3 / JULY – SEP. 2000

[ BSP MEMORANDUM, July 19, 2000 ]

HIGHLY DECEPTIVE COUNTERFEIT 100-US DOLOR NOTE NEW DESIGN SERIES (ENLARGED PORTRAIT OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN)

The Cash Department of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has received and examined a number of counterfeit 100-US dollar notes of the New Design Series (enlarged portrait of Benjamin Franklin) with certain features that make the notes highly deceptive but can be detected as counterfeit by checking the following:

1.    Paper — contains red and blue fibers but relatively thinner and smoother to the touch.
2.    Portrait — Franklin appears to have shorter left eyebrow and shallower left inner ear.
3.    Watermark — less opaque; with wrinkled eyebrows, pointed nose and wider neckline.
4.    Security Thread — the microletterings "USA 100" are thicker, closely spaced and "blurry"; when viewed under an ultraviolet light, the reaction is brighter and intermittent.
5.    Lacework Design — the fine web-like crisscrossing lines are not as sharp and as distinct as in the genuine.
6.    Serial Numbers — the letters and numerals are not uniformly aligned.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE YOU GET HOLD OF THIS TYPE OF COUNTERFEIT

Examine all doubtful notes especially those with enlarged portrait of Benjamin Franklin. In case you are holding a counterfeit, communicate with the BSP Cash Department's Currency Analysis and Redemption Division at Tel. Nos. 524-2777, 524-7011 local 2296 or with the Investigation Staff at Tel Nos. 523-9806, 524-7011 local 2388 or the nearest Bangko Sentral Regional Office/Sub-Regional Office/Cash Unit.
