[ IPO OFFICE ORDER NO. 039, S. 2000, September 13, 2000 ]

INTERNET DOMAIN NAMES (IDN)



WHEREAS, the internet medium of communication has revolutionized the conduct of commerce and trade;

WHEREAS, there is a need to bring the regulations up to date to be more responsive to the high speed interchange of transaction and communication through the internet;

WHEREAS, aware of the need to protect internet domain names (IDN) as intellectual property, holders of IDN seek to register their IDN as service mark with the IPO;

WHEREAS, the regulations must be responsive to the needs of the holders of internet domain names (IDN).

WHEREFORE, Rule 605 of TRADEMARK REGULATIONS on order of examination and priority of action, as amended by Office Order No 08, series of 2000, and dated May 12, 2000, subject to the applicability of other provisions of the Regulations, is hereby, further, amended by inserting in the second paragraph thereof the following:

"g.     Domain names." (as service mark)

Mr. Eduardo Joson, Records Officer II, is hereby directed to file three (3) certified copies of this Office Order with the University of the Philippines Law Center, and, one (1) certified copy each to the Office of the President, the Senate of the Philippines, the House of Representatives, the Supreme Court of the Philippines, and the National Library.

This Order shall take effect immediately.
