[ PRC BOARD OF OPTOMETRY RESOLUTION NO. 01, SERIES 2004, January 05, 2004 ]

RECALLING OR SETTING ASIDE BOARD RESOLUTION NO. 01 DATED JANUARY 30, 1998 SUSPENDING IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SUBJECTS FOR EXAMINATION AND THEIR PERCENTAGE WEIGHTS UNDER SECTION 26(A), RULE V OF RESOLUTION NO. 03, SERIES OF 1997, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE "RULES AND REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE EXAMINATION AND REGISTRATION OF OPTOMETRISTS AND THE REGULATION OF THE PRACTICE OF OPTOMETRY"



WHEREAS, Sec. 19(c) of Republic Act No. 8050, otherwise known as the "Revised Optometry Law of 1995", requires that an applicant to the licensure examination for Optometrist must be a holder of a degree of Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) obtained from a school, college, university or institution duly accredited by the government after passing at least a six-year course;

WHEREAS, after consultation with the Council of Deans and the Academe, the Board of Optometry issued Resolution No. 01, dated January 30, 1998, suspending the implementation of the provisions of Section 26(a), Rule V of the "Rules and Regulations Governing the Examination and Registration of Optometrists and the Regulation of the Practice of Optometry" as regards the subjects and the weighted average in the licensure examination for Optometrists until the first graduates of the six-year course in Optometry shall take the said examination;

WHEREAS, after consultation with the Council of Deans and the Academe on August 25, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at the PABE Library, the Board of Optometry finally resolved to lift the suspension on the implementation of the above-mentioned Resolution, considering that school year 2003-2004 will produce the first graduates for the six-year (6) curriculum;

NOW, THEREFORE, the Board, pursuant to Section 12(b) of Republic Act No. 8050, hereby resolved, as it so resolves, to recall or set aside Resolution No. 01 dated January 30, 1998, thereby lifting the suspension on the implementation of the provisions of Section 26(a), Rule V of the "Rules and Regulations Governing the Examination and Registration of Optometrists and the Regulation of the Practice of Optometry" and, accordingly, to apply the Syllabi of the Examination Subjects in the licensure examination for Optometrists, an integral part of Resolution No. 04, Series of 1997, for the observance thereof in the preparation of test questions for the 2004 and succeeding licensure examinations of Optometrists.

FURTHER, RESOLVED, in the 2004 and subsequent licensure examinations for Optometrists, the applicant must be a holder of a six-year degree of Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) as required by Sec. 26 (c) of R.A. No. 8050 and as prescribed by the Commission on Higher Education through CHED Memorandum Order No. 47 Series of 1997, otherwise known as the "Updated Policies and Standards For Optometry Education"; provided, graduate of the four-year degree of O.D. under the repealed law, R.A. No. 1998 shall not be admitted to sit in the foregoing licensure examinations until and unless they shall have obtained the foregoing six-year degree.

Let copies of this Resolution be issued to all recognized schools, colleges, and universities offering the course of optometry for dissemination to their students and graduates.

This Resolution shall take effect after fifteen (15) days following its full and complete publication in the Official Gazette or in a newspaper of general circulation, whichever comes earlier.
