[ EXECUTIVE ORDER NO. 244, May 12, 1995 ]

DIRECTING THE COMMITTEE ON SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL COOPERATION WITH SOCIALIST COUNTRIES TO DELETE THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA FROM THE LIST OF COUNTRIES COVERED BY LETTER OF INSTRUCTIONS NO. 444



WHEREAS, Letter of Instructions No. 444 has included the People's Republic of the China in the list of socialist and other centrally-planned economy countries;

WHEREAS, market forces now play a determining role in the economy of the People's Republic of China;

WHEREAS, the People's Republic of China has applied for accession to the World Trade Organization;

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Government to develop and strengthen trade relations with the People's Republic of China;

WHEREAS, continued coverage of the People's Republic of China by Letter of Instructions No. 444 is no longer consistent with the county's national interest, as coursing Republic of the Philippines-People's Republic of China Trade through the Philippine International Trading Corporation as provided for under letter of Instructions No. 444 is becoming an unnecessary barrier to trade;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FIDEL V. RAMOS, President of the Republic of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby order:

The Committee on Scientific and Technical Cooperation with Socialist Countries to delete the People's Republic of China from the list of countries covered by Letter of Instruction No. 444.
