(NAR) VOL. 10 NO. 2 / APRIL - JUNE 1999

[ DECS MEMORANDUM NO. 199, S. 1999, April 28, 1999 ]

SUMMER TRAINING FOR GRADE ONE TEACHERS ON THE STRENGTHENING OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES IN GRADE ONE

  1. There is a need to strengthen the Early Childhood Experiences in Grade One to improve the school readiness of the pupils and to created a child-friendly environment for them.

  2. For a smoother transition from home to school, there is also a need for a curriculum which is more responsive to the varying needs of the 6-year old pupils.

  3. To help address these concerns, Grade One teachers need to be trained on the use of the revised 8-week ECD curriculum in May 1999.

  4. Under the Early Childhood Development Project (ECDP), an inter-agency and WB-ADB-assisted project, all Grade One teachers in Regions 6, 7, and 12 will be trained for three years on a staggered basis. Training funds and materials will be sent to these regions as soon as these are released by WB and ADB through the Municipal Development Funds (MDF).

  5. The training of the Grade One teachers will be facilitated by Regional and Division Preschool Supervisors who were trained on the Program in February and March, 1999. They may be assisted by other personnel who have had previous preschool/early childhood training.

  6. Other regions not included in the ECDP may train their Grade One teachers by using their local funds or by making appropriate arrangements to carry out such training.

  7. Wide dissemination and compliance of this memorandum is desired.
