[ BAI MEMORANDUM ORDER NO. 01, S. 2009, January 08, 2009 ]

LIFTING THE TEMPORARY BAN ON THE IMPORTATION OF DOMESTIC AND WILD BIRDS AND THEIR PRODUCTS INCLUDING POULTRY MEAT, DAY OLD CHICKS, EGGS AND SEMEN ORIGINATING FROM UNITED KINGDOM



WHEREAS, based on the report submitted to the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) by Dr. Nigel Gibbens, Chief Veterinary Officer, last 28 August 2008, United Kingdom declares that the H7N7 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) incident in Oxford shire, United Kingdom has been successfully eradicated;

WHEREAS, the surveillance zone and disease control area restrictions that were put in place following the outbreak were lifted on 8 July 2008 and that surveillance has shown that infection appears to have been contained to the single premises;

WHEREAS, the final cleaning and disinfection on the single infected premises was completed on 20 August, 2008;

WHEREAS, based on the evaluation of the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), the risk of contamination from importing poultry and poultry products from United Kingdom is negligible;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ATTY. ARTHUR C. YAP, Secretary of Agriculture, by the powers vested in me by la w, do hereby lift the temporary ban on the importation of domestic and wild birds and their products including poultry meat, day old chicks, eggs and semen originating from United Kingdom.

All import transactions of the above products shall be in accordance with the existing rules and regulations of the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Animal Industry and National Meat Inspection Service (DA-BAI-NMIS).

All orders, rules and regulations or parts thereof, which are inconsistent with the provisions of this order, are hereby repealed or amended accordingly.

This ORDER shall take effect immediately.
