RESIDUAL DEMAND FOR FILIPINO NURSES IN JORDAN
In a move to address the problem of unemployment among Jordanian nurses, the Jordan Nurses and Midwives Association (JNMA) has decided to freeze licensing of non-Jordanian nurses. There are more than 1,000 well qualified and well trained nurses, mostly females, without jobs in Jordan.
The Philippine Embassy in Amman has reported that there is only a “residual” demand for Filipino nurses in Jordan’s labor market and the salary rates are not competitive. The starting salary of US$400-US$500 is less than half of what is offered by hospitals in the Arabian Gulf States and without the additional perks and benefits.
The report also stated the difficulty in obtaining employment visas for Filipino nurses, as the Ministry of Labor has decreed that only graduates of the top seven (7) Philippine-nursing schools will be admitted for employment in Jordan. To go around this restriction, some hospitals have categorized Filipino nurses as “nursing aides” or “hospital cleaners”.
