(NAR) VOL. 9 NO. 4 / OCTOBER - DECEMBER 1998

[ POEA MEMORANDUM CIRCULAR No. 16 s. 1998, September 07, 1998 ]

CREATION OF A MEMORIAL FOR SEAFARERS WHO PERISHED AT SEA AS A RESULT OF MARINE CASUALTY

In the 80th Session of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), held on 15-19 June 1998, a proposal of the Secretary General was adopted by the Council to established a seafares memorial and trust fund in memory of seafarers who perished at sea in the service of the maritime industry.

The Philippine, as a member of the IMO Council and as a seafaring nation with a long history of maritime tradition, finds this undertaking meritorious and worthy of support.

This Administration therefore takes the lead for the government to solicit the support of the maritime sectors concerned for the establishment of the said seafarers memorial and trust fund.

The sectors above-mentioned are requested to provide the POEA with list of Filipino seafarers who lost their lives as a result of marine casualty while in the employment of their companies and under the membership/care of their unions.

The list shall be forwarded to the IMO in London where a permanent memorial of seafarers of all nationalities shall be established.

It will be appreciated if the information requested could be submitted to the POEA, attention of the Sea-based Employment Accreditation and Processing Center, not later than 15 October 1998.

The cooperation and support of the Sectors concerned is hereby enjoined.

Adopted: 07 Sept. 1998
