A CRACKDOWN BY MALAYSIAN IMMIGRATION AUTHORITIES ON FILIPINO MUSICIANS WITHOUT WORK PERMITS
We have quoted hereunder a fax message from Ambassador Alberto Encomienda of the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur concerning a crackdown by Malaysia Immigration Authorities on Filipino musicians and other entertainers working in that country without the necessary permit:
Everyone is hereby directed to ensure that performing artists including musicians and show bands who are deployed to Malaysia have all the entry and work permits required by that country.

"The Malaysian Immigration Authorities In Penang Detained Eight (8) Men and Five (5) Women From Two Filipino Bands for Performing Without Work Permits. The Filipino Musicians Were Arrested At Two Lounges in Kontar on Saturday, 9 April 1994.
Penang State Immigration Director Haji Tasnim Othman Said the Action Was Aimed at Flushing Out Illegal Bands Performing at Local Hotels And Pubs. He Warned that Action Would be taken against the Illegal Performers. Their Employers And Promoters. Under Section 51 (5b) of the Malaysia Immigration Act, The bands could be fined a maximum of Rm. 10,000 or Five Years Imprisonment or both upon Conviction."
Everyone is hereby directed to ensure that performing artists including musicians and show bands who are deployed to Malaysia have all the entry and work permits required by that country.
