(NAR) VOL. 22 NO. 1, JANUARY - MARCH 2011

[ POEA ADVISORY NO. 08, S. 2011, February 25, 2011 ]

SINGAPORE ENFORCES ITS 23-YEAR AGE REQUIREMENT FOR FOREIGN HOUSEHOLD SERVICE WORKERS

The Strait Times, an English daily broadsheet in Singapore, has published an article on its 29 December 2010 issue, citing the strict implementation by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM) of the minimum 23-year age requirement for foreign household service workers.

According to the news, article, the intensified surveillance and enforcement efforts by the MOM, has resulted to stern warnings issued to fourteen (14) employment agencies found violating the city-state’s minimum 23-year age requirement for foreign household service workers. Four (4) of the said agencies were also issued demerits by the MOM, which put them at risk of losing their license.

Our laws, rules and regulations, particularly R.A. No. 10022 amending R.A. No. 8042, prohibits the deployment of under-aged workers overseas. Recruitment agencies are therefore strongly advised to exercise due diligence to avoid legal problems arising out  of deploying under-aged household service workers.

For the information and guidance of all concerned.
