[ PRC RESOLUTION NO. 14, s. of 1993, October 26, 1993 ]

BOARD OF RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY

PROMULGATION AND SYLLABI OF THE SUBJECTS IN THE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY AND X-RAY TECHNOLOGY LICENSURE EXAMINATIONS



WHEREAS Sec. 18 of R.A. No. 7431 states that "Except as otherwise specifically allowed under the provisions of this Act and other existing laws, all applicants for registration as radiologic technologists and x-ray technologists shall be required to undergo an examination x x x x";

WHEREAS Secs. 20 and 21 of supra law provide the subjects in the licensure examinations and grants the Board to change or modify them as the need arises through issuance of a resolution therein;

WHEREAS the Commission issued MEMORANDUM CIRCULAR NO. 08, Series of 1992, directing every Board to prescribe and adopt a syllabus for every subject in the licensure examinations;

WHEREAS every syllabus containing the concepts/topics with the corresponding level of knowledge/proficiency shall be the basis for the questions that will be inputted into the question bank;

WHEREAS after consultation by the Board with the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS) and the Philippine Association of Radiologic Technologists, Inc. (PART), the accredited professional association, the syllabi of the subjects (Annex "A") in the examinations were adopted,

NOW, THEREFORE, by virtue of Secs. 9 (g) and 13 of R.A. No. 7431, the Board hereby RESOLVED, as it so RESOLVES, to adopt the Syllabi of the Subjects in the Radiologic Technology and X-Ray Technology Licensure Examinations ( Annex "A").

FURTHER, RESOLVED, that this Resolution shall be widely disseminated and circularized to all colleges, schools offering the courses/degrees of Radiologic Technology and X-Ray Technology.

FINALLY, RESOLVED, that this Resolution, upon its approval by the Commission, shall be effective on a date which is one (1) month after the publication thereof in a newspaper of general circulation.

REQUIRED LEVELS OF KNOWLEDGE AND/OR PROFICIENCY

Definition

A.        Knowledge - an aquaintance with facts, principles, familiarity, or conversance, as from study of investigation; the perception of facts or principles; appreciation; understanding; comprehension.

Knowledge - as used in these syllabi is associated with theoretical, evaluation and analysis.

AK - Adequate Knowledge (AK) is a sufficiently comprehensive knowledge of principles, theories, concepts, structures.

SK - Sound Knowledge (SK) is a thorough understanding of principles, theories, concepts, structures and relationship.

B.        PROFICIENCY - as a state of being skilled, able or adept.

Proficiency - as used in these syllabi is associated with practical applications of knowledge, where a demonstration of technical ability is required as in problem-solving.

AP - Adequate Proficiency (AP) - to apply these in broad terms in situation most likely to be encountered in practice without recourse to extensive technical research and assistance.

CP - Competent Proficiency (CP) - to apply these in situations most likely to be encountered in practice without recourse to extensive technical research assistance.

I.          PHYSICS OF DIAGNOSTIC RADIATION AND PROTECTION

AK - A.            Radiation Physics: Matter and energy, theory of atoms and molecules, nuclear structure and bonding, radioactivity, electromagnetism, radiation interaction and measurements.

SK - B.            Radiation Apparatus and Equipment Maintenance: Production and properties of x-rays, the x-ray tube, high tension generators, the x-ray machines, components of an x-ray circuits, x-ray accessory devices.

SK - C.           Radiobiology and Radiation Protection: Electromagnetic radiation, radiation protection quantities and units, Physio-chemical interaction on radiation biology, radiation effects (somatic/genetic), radiation protection dosages.

II.         IMAGE PRODUCTION AND EVALUATION

CP - A.           Photochemistry/Darkroom Procedures: Processing room facilities, processing accessories, x-ray films, intensifying screens, handling and storage and protection of x-ray film, processing procedures, automatic processor.

SK & CP - B. Radiographic Technique or Fundamentals in Radiography: X-ray production, X-ray beam and image formation, image recording, mathematical relationship of different mechanical factors, technical evaluation film critiques, equipment and technical evaluation procedures.

III.        RADIOGRAPHIC PROCEDURES AND TECHNIQUES

SK & CP - A. Radiographic Positioning: Proper positioning of patient, upper limb, lower limb, trunk region, abdomen and retroperetoneal space, skull pediatric radiography.

SK & CP - B. Special Procedures with Contrast Media: Types of Contrast Media, perform accurate procedures in specific parts of the human body such as:
  1. Digestive System

  2. Urogenital System

  3. Respiratory System

  4. Radiography of the CNS

  5. Vascular System
SK & CP - C. Special Procedures without Contrast Media: Basic coordination, proper positioning of the skull according to specific structures, modified skull examinations, special radiographic examination involving vertibral column, other various specific structures like: Pelvimitry, placentographic, macro radiography, subtraction method and abdominal series examination.

IV.       Patient Care, Management and Human Anatomy and Physiology with Medical Terminology

AK & AP - A. Nursing Procedures: Patient care, technologist patient care, first aid, emergency procedures at the X-ray Department.

AK - B.            Departmental Administration: Important functions of Management, Important Organization, Staffing, Functions of an Administrator, Hospital and its Purpose, Ethical Standards, Duties and Obligations of Personnel in the X-ray Department, qualities of a competent technologist.

SK - C.           Professional Ethics: R.A. 7431, Board of Radiologic Technology, Code of Ethics, Board of Radiologic Technology Rules and Regulations, Persons contributed to the discovery of X-ray, Law, Subpoena, Contempt of Court, and Professional Obligation, Crime against Community, Contract, Penal Provision.

SK & CP - D. Human Antomy and Physiology:
  1. Human Antomy I: Cytology, bone, skeletal structure, function, abnormalities and their radiographic application; muscles, ligaments related to radiography as their structures, origin and insertion.

  2. Human Antomy 2: Nomenclature; body system structures, functions, anatomical positions, cross-section, abnormalities and its application to radiography for: gastro-intestinal, respiratory, cardio-vascular, genito-urinary, reproductive and central nervous system; specific radiography examinations of Chest X-ray, GI series, IV Pyelography.
V.        RADIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

SK - A.            Radiographic Pathology: Pathological description used in various organ such as lung, heart and great vessels, abdomen, gastro-intestinal, hepatobiliary, pancreas, KUB, reproductive, head and vertebral column, skeletal structures, brain and spinal cord.

SK & CP - B. Radio-Therapy: Iomizing and Non-Iomizing radiation, treatment plan, Radio therapy units, radiation detection, radiation calibration techniques, principles of isodose planning, radiotherapy malignanius.

SK & CP - C. Diagnostic Ultrasound: Importance, principles of Ultrasound, mode of scanning, artifacts and pitfalls, anatomical presentation in scanning, (such as obstetric condition, hepato-biliary, kidney, urogenetals, thyroid, abscess) interventional ultrasound, ultrasound factoring, permanent image recording.

SK & CP - D. CT Scan: CT Scan units, CT scan tube, construction and design, systems control, console operation, function keys, system performance, quality assurance, scan program (scout scan, axial, dynamic, RX files) periodic maintenance and photography.

MRI: Imaging technic, instrumentation, biologic effect, basic MRI anatomy.

SK & CP - E. Nuclear Medicine: Basic atomic and nuclear structures, radioactivity, radiation detectors, callimation system, radio pharmaceuticals, clinical procedures (In-vivo/In-vitro), quality assurance, radiation protection, emergency procedures.
