(NAR) VOL. 21 NO.4 OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2010

[ POEA ADVISORY NO. 24, S. 2010, November 02, 2010 ]

INCREASE IN PIRACY ATTACK IN THE GULF OF ADEN

The Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation has issued a report warning to ship operators of anticipated increase in piracy attacks in the Gulf of Aden from October through early December due to the end of the monsoon season.

During this time of the year, the sea is calm and the favorable weather condition allows for small boat activity in the Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, Indian Ocean and waters off the Horn of Africa region. This is the period favorable for the pirates to mount their attacks.

The report also indicated that recent attacks have occurred off the Kenyan and Tanzanian coasts, the Southern Red Sea, Seychelles and Maldives.

All manning agencies are therefore reminded to provide their seafarers the required anti-piracy awareness seminar prior to their departure. Employers/principals are likewise encouraged to use the International Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) where multinational naval forces are monitoring the activities in the Gulf of Aden, to will help deter piracy in the region.

For information.
