GUIDE ON EARTHQUAKE-RESISTANT DESIGN OF BUILDINGS AND RELATED STRUCTURES

For purposes of guidance and in mitigating damages due to earthquake, the engineering professionals, particularly Structural Engineers, undertaking designs for construction of private and public buildings and related structures, the DPWH is issuing this Advisory.

1. As a minimum requirement, the design shall conform with the current National Building Code and its referral codes, particularly the National Structural Code of the Philippines, Volume I, Revised Edition 1991.

2. The Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (ASEP) has published an ASEP Guide to Earthquake-Resistant Design, 1991 which should be adopted as reference.

3. Special Advisory is given for areas subjected for liquefaction. Design Engineers are advised to address this problem in their design.

4. Special Advisory is given for areas on high elevations and on slopes subjected to landslides with the probable occurrence of the phenomenon of “ridge amplification”. Design Engineers are likewise advised to consider this problem in their design.
