ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS IN THE REGISTRATION OF VIRGIN COCONUT OIL FOOD SUPPLEMENT WITH FLAVOR



This Bureau Circular is hereby issued to serve as a guide in the evaluation of applications for registration of virgin coconut oil food supplement with added flavor. The product name “Virgin Coconut Oil with Flavor Food Supplement” shall be allowed only when the product complies with the following provisions:

1. That the raw material (virgin coconut oil) used conforms with the Philippine National Standards for Virgin Coconut Oil.

2. That the flavoring added should be generally recognized as safe and suitable for human consumption as evidenced by a certification from the supplier. The nature of flavor used (natural, nature-identical, artificial) shall be indicated in the list of ingredients.

3. No other food additive shall be allowed except the flavor.

4. The labels shall conform with B.C. # 2 s. 1999 (Amendment to BFAD MC No. 25, s. 1992 otherwise known as “Additional Labeling Requirement for Food Supplements”)

5. The term “Food Supplement” shall be part of the product name.

These requirements shall be in effect in addition to all other registration requirements for virgin coconut oil beginning 01 January 2007. However, virgin coconut oil manufacturers, distributors, exporters, wholesalers, repackers, importers shall be given six (6) months to make the necessary modifications on their labels.

This Bureau Circular shall take effect immediately.
