(NAR) VOL. 22 NO. 3, JULY - SEPTEMBER 2011

[ DPWH DEPARTMENT ORDER NO. 06, S. 2011, February 08, 2011 ]

PROPER APPLICATION OF ASPHALT SEALANT ON TRANSVERSE CONTRACTION/WEAKENED PLANE, CONSTRUCTION, AND LONGITUDINAL JOINTS OF CONCRETE PAVEMENTS

It has been observed that in concrete paving works implemented by the Department either by Contract or by Administration, the application of asphalt sealant on the transverse contraction/weakened plane, construction, and longitudinal joints is not properly undertaken. The application of insufficient asphalt sealant affects the structural integrity and imperviousness to water of the concrete pavement and its underlying courses while excessive application affects to a certain degree the smoothness bumpiness and finishing of the pavement riding surface.

In view hereof, all heads the concerned project implementing offices of the Department are hereby directed to strictly observe proper application of asphalt sealant, using the appropriate penetration grade, on all types of joint of the concrete pavement in accordance with Subsection 311.3.17 (Sealing Joints) of the DPWH Standard Specifications. Moreover, it should be ensured that the surface of newly completed concrete pavements is free from any excess asphalt sealant and concrete laitance prior to opening to traffic.

This Order takes effect immediately.
