(NAR) VOL. II NO. 3 / JULY - SEPTEMBER 1991

[ POEA MEMORANDUM CIRCULAR NO. 30 s. 1990, March 30, 1990 ]

GRAVE CONSEQUENCES OF/SERVE PENALTIES FOR CRIMES COMMITTED IN SAUDI ARABIA

There have been recurrent reports on the loss of lives and limbs of criminal offenders in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia owing to strict Sharia laws. The latest development thereon include the reported execution of a Pakistani for smuggling of drugs and cutting off the hands of four (4) Filipinos for robbery and theft.

To prevent the occurrence of the same or similar incidences wherein a number of our own overseas contract workers have suffered such tragic fate, the Administration deems it proper to reiterate the importance of informing about-to-leave Overseas Contract Worker (OCWs) during PDOS, the grave consequences of and severe penalties for violations of KSA penal laws.

All parties concerned are therefore enjoined to inculcate in the minds of departing workers, the strict manner by which violators of Sharia laws are dealt with in that country, thru the Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS) and/or supplemental PDOS.

For the information and guidance of all concerned.

Adopted: 30 Mar. 1990
