INSTRUMENT OF ACCESSION

Whereas the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia was signed on the Twenty fourth day of February, One thousand nine hundred and seventy-six by the representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Republic of the Philippines, - the Republic of Singapore and the Kingdom of Thailand and acceded to by Brunei Darussalam by virtue of the Declaration of the Admission of Brunei Darussalam into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, signed in Jakarta on the Seventh day of January, One thousand nine hundred and eighty-four;

Whereas it is provided in Article IS of the said Treaty as amended by the Protocol Amending of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, signed in Manila on the Fifteenth day of December, One thousand nine hundred and eighty-seven that states outside Southeast Asia may also accede to the said Treaty by the consent of all the States in Southeast Asia which are signatories to the said Treaty and Brunei Darussalam;

And whereas, the Government of Papua New Guinea has considered and examined the said Treaty;

Now therefore, the Government of Papua New Guinea hereby accedes to the said Treaty and undertakes faithfully to observe and carry out all the provisions therein contained.

In witness whereof, I, Michael Somare, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Papua New Guinea, have hereunto set ray hand and affixed the National Seal of Papua New Guinea.

Done at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Port Moresby, this 5th  day of July, One thousand nine hundred and eighty-nine.
