PRACTICAL MEASURES TO SURVIVE AS A HOSTAGE IN A PIRACY ATTACK



In order to further enhance the security of the human person and the well-being of every Filipino seafarer and crew on-board Philippine registered ships and following the results of the discussion of the issue of piracy and armed robbery against ships during the margins of the 86th Session of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC86) which was held at the IMO Headquarters in London from 27 May – 05 June 2009, all shipping companies and relevant maritime entities are enjoined to disseminate to all their seafarers and crew on-board their ships the attached[*] extract from the United Nations (UN) Guidance on Surviving as a Hostage.

The above-mentioned UN Guidance, lifted from “Security in the Field-Information for Staff Members of the United Nations System” was made as an attachment to MSC86/WP.7/Add.1 which was approved at the Plenary of the MSC86.
