[ POEA MEMORANDUM CIRCULAR NO. 51, S. 1995, August 28, 1995 ]

IMO CIRCULAR ON PIRACY AND ARMED ROBBERY AGAINST SHIPS

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) issued a Circular warning about the increasing cases of piracy and armed robbery against ships. The areas most affected are the South China Sea, the coast of Somalia, the Arabian Peninsula and the north eastern part of South America.

In view of this, may we reiterate POEA Memorandum Circular No. 17, Series of 1995, enjoining agencies to warn their departing seafarers of such unlawful activities. Please advise them to keep only enough cash for personal needs with the rest of their salary remitted immediately to their beneficiaries.

Adopted: 28 Aug. 1995
