[ PRC BOARD OF DENTISTRY RESOLUTION NO. 14, S. 2005, August 23, 2005 ]

RESOLUTION PRESCRIBING THE EXPANDED SCOPE OF THE DENTAL PERFORMANCE LICENSURE EXAMINATION



WHEREAS, Sec. 18, Art. IV of R.A. No. 4419, known as “The Philippine Dental Act of 1965”, states in part, to wit: “SECTION 18. Scope of examination. – The licensure examination for the practice of dentistry in the Philippines shall consist of both written and performance tests, the scope of which shall be determined and prescribed by the Board x x x x”;

WHEREAS, an examinee may obtain scores as high as 100% in the theoretical phase and another 100% in the performance phase; when assembled however, his/her scores are valued at 50% for theory and 50% for performance in order to compute his combined grade from both phases;

WHEREAS, in the last four decades, performance testing has had a value of less than 50% because such exercise has consisted only of Prosthetic Dentistry and Restorative Dentistry, only two out of about ten (10) areas in the clinical practice of Dentistry;

WHEREAS, in view of ethical issues involved in the use of live patients Full Denture Construction, shall be limited to other acceptable alternatives; and

WHEREAS, after consultation with the academe and in consideration of its beneficial impact on the more effective gauge of every examinee’s dental practical proficiency, the Board decided to expand the scope of the said performance licensure examination;

NOW, THEREFORE, the Board hereby Resolved, as it now resolves, to prescribe the expanded scope of the Performance phase of the Dental Licensure Examination through distribution of the exercises to more areas in the clinical practice of Dentistry as follows:

    1. Prosthetic Dentistry ____________________ 60%

      1.1 Full Denture Construction without live patients – 30%
      1.2 Removable Partial Denture Design with prescription writing – 15%
      1.3 3-Unit Fixed Bridge – 15%

    2. Restorative Dentistry ___________________ 20%

      2.1 Class II Cavity preparation of two (2) ivorine teeth, the other to be filled up with silver amalgam material – 15%
      2.2 Class III cavity preparation of two proximal ivorine teeth, the adjacent surfaces of which are to be filled up with glass ionomer material – 5%

    3. Pediatric Dentistry _____________________ 5%

      3.1 Crown preparation for stainless crown

    4. Endodontics __________________________ 15%

RESOLVED, FURTHER, no exercise shall involve the use of live patient in Complete Denture Construction; and

FINALLY, RESOLVED, the herein Resolution shall be implemented in the December 2005 and every subsequent Dental Performance Licensure Examination.

This Resolution shall take effect after fifteen (15) days following its full and complete publication in the Official Gazette or any newspaper of general circulation in the Philippines.
